Aravindhan Ganesan |PhD
Leader of ArGan's Lab
My Vision for ArGan'sLab is to achieve research excellence by creating an equal and inclusive training environment that supports diverse ideas and quality research outcomes.
Dr. Ganesan, currently an Assistant Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has a diverse academic background and research experience.
He obtained an Integrated Masters in Bioinformatics from India and completed his PhD in computational chemistry at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, under the supervision of Professor Wang. Following his PhD, he pursued postdoctoral research at the Australian National University with Professor Coote and later at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences with Dr. Barakat and Nobel laureate Professor Michael Houghton. He has been recognized with prestigious fellowships, including the German DAAD Research Fellowship and the Australian Endeavour Research Fellowship.
Dr. Ganesan began his independent research career as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo-School of Pharmacy during 2019-2024. In July 2024, he joined Wilfrid Laurier University, where he currently leads a research team focusing on biocomputing and therapeutics discovery.

His research programs focuses on probing the molecular mechanisms of integral membrane proteins, the discovery of small molecule therapeutics for various human diseases, and the development of new computational software for structural biology research and analyses. Notably, his team at ArGan's Lab made significant contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying novel hotspots in the coronavirus main protease and discovering potent inhibitors targeting viral replication. Additionally, his research extends to areas such as polypharmacology of cannabinoids, protein aggregation in neurodegeneration, small molecule therapeutics against immune checkpoints, and the study of lipid scramblases.

Dr. Ganesan's career exemplifies his passion for tackling challenging scientific questions and making impactful contributions to both academia and therapeutic development.
